Dama brings the great family of draughts and checkers games together on one wooden board. Pick the rules you grew up with: International draughts on the big 10×10 board with flying kings and the majority capture rule, English and American checkers with short kings on 8×8, Russian draughts where a man crowned in the middle of a capture carries on as a king, Brazilian draughts with international rules on the small board, or Turkish dama, played on every square with straight moves, sixteen pieces each and long-range kings.

Every rule is enforced for you. Captures are compulsory, multi-jumps go on until no more pieces can be taken, and in the variants that require it you must take the largest number of pieces. Tap or drag a piece and the game shows every legal move, including the whole route of a long capture and the pieces it will remove. The move list follows each game in proper notation, and draws come from the real rules of each variant: threefold repetition, too many moves without a capture or a man moving, and the endgame move limits.

Play the computer on Easy, Normal, Hard or Master; it thinks in the background and looks ahead through every forced capture. Undo a move when you slip, flip the board, choose walnut, maple, ebony or olive wood. Play a friend on the same phone or tablet, or go online: quick match a player who picked the same rules, or create a private room and share its four-letter code. Online games give 60 seconds per move. Your settings, stats and an unfinished game against the computer are saved automatically.

How to play

  1. Choose a rule set: International (10×10), English checkers, Russian, Brazilian or Turkish dama.
  2. Tap one of your pieces to see where it can go, then tap a highlighted square, or drag the piece there. Men move forward one square (diagonally, or in Turkish dama straight ahead or sideways).
  3. Capture by jumping over an enemy piece to the empty square behind it, and keep jumping while you can. Capturing is compulsory; in International, Brazilian and Turkish rules you must take the most pieces.
  4. A man that reaches the far row becomes a king. Kings move in every direction, and in all variants except English checkers they fly across any number of empty squares.
  5. Win by capturing all enemy pieces or leaving your opponent without a legal move.

FAQ

What is the difference between checkers and draughts?

They are the same family of games. English and American checkers is played on an 8×8 board with kings that move one square, while International draughts uses a 10×10 board with flying kings and the rule that you must capture the most pieces. Dama has both, plus the Russian, Brazilian and Turkish versions.

How is Turkish dama different?

Turkish dama uses all 64 squares and pieces move straight: men go forward or sideways one square and capture the same way, never backwards. Each side has sixteen men on the second and third rows, kings fly along rows and columns, captured pieces leave the board at once, and you must take as many pieces as possible.

Can I play checkers online with a friend?

Yes. Choose Online Match, pick the rules, then Create room and send your friend the four-letter code; they choose Join room and type it. Quick match pairs you with a random player who picked the same rules. You can also play two players on one device.
